Thoughts on the Eurovision Song Contest

I first heard about the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 when a friend told me about them. It was started in 1956. Most of the songs that I have heard from the competition were sung in English. I do not know what percentage of the of the songs entered and the percentage of winners were sung in English. I know that I have preferred hearing some of the participants singing in their native languages. I do not think they perform badly in English, but I enjoy hearing a diversity of languages. Sometimes emotions of songs come through more strongly in one's native tongue. I am now listening for the first time to ABBA singing in Swedish. The songs have a depth that they lack in their early recordings in English. I would like to see a competition where the emphasis is placed on the songs and not on political differences and linguistic differences. I think that music couls be a very good way to bring people from different countries together.
