I do not understand people who want to take everything in the Bible literally. The creation story does not make sense if you take it literally. Fundamentalists act as if science were mutually exclusive. They equate belief in evolution with blasphemy. I have heard some people say that God made the earth so that it would look older than it is. This makes no sense. So they think that God would purposely put things in place that could lead people doubt his existence? Where did Cain's wife come from? This is not addressed anywhere. She just is there all of sudden. The creation story only makes sense as allegory.
